Learning Target: I learned the history behind how abcya was created and how it expanded to the great resource it is in my classroom today.
abcya:
It is the leader in free educational computer games and mobile apps for kids. It was the innovation of a grade school technology teacher. Abcya is an award-winning destination for elementary students. It offers hundreds of fun, engaging learning activities. Millions of kids, parents, and teachers visit abcya.com each month. Over 1 billion games were played on this site last year. Abcya's popular educational games have been featured by Apple, The New York Times, USA Today, Parent's Magazine, and Scholastic, just to name a few.
Abcya was developed by a first year school teacher as he created a website that incorporated what fellow teachers had on lesson plans and that were easy for five year old children to learn to use. In 2004, when he developed this site to use for teaching a technology class to five year old's, he found it was hard for them to read instructions and click the right spot, etc. He created abcya as the name because he wanted the shortest possible URL, so that young kids could enter it easily into the browser. After receiving many compliments from co-worker at his school he developed more and more activities over the next few years. He then realized after receiving compliments form other's outside his school, that his site was being used by others as well. In 2006, while he was using Google to search for educational computer activities to use in his classroom the number one result was his own abcya.com. In 2011, abcya's mobile app, Math Bingo was featured on Apple's website and installed on the demo iPads at Apple retail stores throughout the U.S.
Today, abcya is one of the most well known educational brands for kids. Abcya.com reaches over 65 million players and annually logs in over 1.5 billion games played The mobile apps have been downloaded almost 5 million times in just a few short years.
In 2015, abcya.com is expected to add new educational games and activities, as well as continue improvements to their current offerings.
